The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International

I have been a supporter of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund for a number of years and admire the work they continue to do.  They have been saving gorillas since 1967.

What took my initial interest with Gorillas was something very simple, the similarity between gorillas and humans.  I know humans and gorillas have close DNA but rather than go over the science part (don’t get me wrong I love science) have you really looked at a gorilla’s hand?  Not just a kind of look over it to answer well of course I have, I mean have you really focused on their hands?  It just blows my mind how the same to humans they are.

When I was heading off to Miami on a work trip, the thought of a 7 hour plane ride meant I needed to buy a good book.  It had to be something I would be interested in and there it was on the shelf, Gorillas in the Mist.  I had seen the 1988 film with Sigourney Weaver of the same title and remembered how it made me feel so it was an easy choice.  Dian Fossey’s story intrigued me and I wanted to know more.

I did read the whole book and it was great to get an insight into part of Dian’s life and the hard work and dedication she had.  One fact remains with me today which is a gorilla’s nose print is different for each gorilla just like a human finger print is.

So the work Dian Fossey started continues with this fund and you can adopt an infant, a mother and child or a silverback.  Another way to support them is to help fund a tracker.  They have education programmes and development initiatives.  They are dedicated to the conservation and protection of gorillas.  The trackers are on patrol to aid the gorillas protection and for research purposes.  Their ecosystem is also threatened.  The fund collab with government agencies to provide assistance to the local community.  Most importantly its all about education.

Part of my support involves two infants I have adopted below.  I chose the green option of course so I had the certificate and information via email which works best for me.  All I ask is if you have the time please check them out and if you can support in any way please do.
